Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality
Macaws are great companion birds. They are incredibly affectionate and intelligent. These birds are ideally suited to families with a range of members. They can get bored easily and will seek out other ways to entertain themselves when their owners don't interact with them enough. Macaws that aren't socialized can become aggressive, and may even bite. It is essential that boundaries are clearly established to ensure that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are lively birds that enjoy playing, climbing and interact. They need at least 2 to 3 hours a day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games while listening to music, and learning tricks. They also enjoy playing in parks and playgrounds as well as hiking and going to local bars and restaurants. In addition to being a great pet, they also make wonderful companions for children.
They can be extremely loud, despite their love for their mate. They can also be a nuisance for those living nearby. They can make ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be disruptive in condominiums and apartments, or near young children who may be frightened by their noise.
Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, meaning males and females are difficult to differentiate. Because of this the only way to reliably identify sex is through DNA testing. Once the bird's sex is established, breeding can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases, and tricks. It is a lengthy process, and the pet's owner has to be patient and understand that this is a challenging task. The use of positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and help correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's Care
For decades activists have been calling for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists believed that Lolita might have a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to go back to the ocean.
Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they place her in an incredibly small tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her a relative in a plan that would eventually take her to open waters. The plan included a facility on the west coast of Washington where she could live for the remaining days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean itself, not an actual concrete tank.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.
Lolita's Training

The first step of the training is System I. System II builds upon the skills taught in System 1 through exercises using equipment. It also introduces teachers to exercises that use the Spine Corrector, Magic Circle, Foam Rollers and Bars. This course is accompanied by a manual and a DVD of Lolita teaching the system for personal practice.
After graduating Lolita's Teacher Training Program, you will be prepared to teach The Pilates Method anywhere on the planet! This course will allow you to perform your job professionally, safely and efficiently with clients. You will gain a thorough understanding of the various exercises and how they interact. You will be able to apply this understanding to any body and help your clients feel strong, safe and confident. Lolita's Legacy produces open-minded teachers who have a deep understanding of the Pilates Method and outstanding teaching skills. Lolita's Diet
Like any animal species, a captive gold and blue macaw's well-being is dependent on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds require high-quality food, as well as plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A macaw that is well-fed in captivity can live for up to 60 years. The majestic bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.

In addition the bird needs plenty of interaction and will bond with her human family members quickly. Macaws of gold and blue often have loud vocalizations which include "flock calls," which is part of their normal behavior. They can also squabble and chew occasionally, particularly when they're angry or bored. This kind of behavior is expected by prospective pet owners.
The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of updates about Lolita's health and status but there are still questions. Some experts, such as Akromas who was the one who trained or supervised the care of Lolita at some point, have raised concerns about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she eats more than 115 pounds of salmon capelin, herring, and squid every day.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they offer their killer whales, specifically Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was removed from Puget Sound, Washington, in the year 1970. While the species is threatened and is in a tank which some consider to be too small.
Lolita's Health
While her beauty is evident, Lolita's health continues to deteriorate. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and want to see that she is released back into nature. Lolita is a resident of the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and was an attraction for tourists for a long time. She has been fighting chronic illnesses and an infection that has left her in a fragile state.
The Miami Seaquarium is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not disclosed information about Lolita's current state of health. Friends of Toki, a non-profit group, has posted monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. They show that she is ageing quickly and her health is deteriorating.
Since her captor doesn't have to disclose this information, it's unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays an important role in the deaths of orcas kept in captivity.
Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita many believe that she could be closer than ever before to living a wild life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has pledged to relocate the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.
The move comes after years of public pressure, including from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean, and possibly even reunite with the orca believed to be her mother. Sadly these plans came late for the beloved whale, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal problem.
